* Weather (rain, snow, thunder)
* Statistics
* Achievements
* Detector rail
* Booster rail
* Performance improvements

The weather effects are a very nice improvement that make the world seem more alive and real. It will periodically rain, snow, or storm adding nice visuals and sound.

A statistics page has been added in game that keeps tracks of a whole manner of things like time played, distance walked, jumps, items dropped, and more! This is great for seeing just how addicted to Minecraft you are. However, since statistics were just implemented past playtimes are not recorded.

The game also keeps track of blocks and items, counting the number of times you have crafted, used, mined, and depleted them.

An achievement system has been added to the game and so far it is pretty horrible I must say. I'm not a huge fan of achievements and it frustrates me a bit that game developers lately have become so obsessed with them. The first wave of Minecraft achievements are completely horrible, they are not achievements at all! Hopefully the next wave will be much better or Minecraft achievements will be just as pointless as most other game achievements.

Here is the full list of Minecraft Achievements in game as of 1.5, I got most of them in a few minutes:
*Press tab to open your inventory
*Attack a tree until a block of wood pops out
*Craft a workbench
*Craft a wooden sword
*Craft a wooden pick
*Craft a better pick
*Craft a wooden hoe
*Kill a monster
*Harvest some leather (kill a cow)
*"Fly a pig off a cliff" (this is the only cool achievement, put a saddle on a pig and have it walk off a cliff)
* Bake bread
*Bake a cake
*Craft a furnace
*Catch and cook a fish
*Smelt Iron
*Ride a minecart 1 kilometer (slightly ok achievement)

I will give Notch credit for the nice achievement "tree" though, I like the design.

Booster rails and detector rails are both very nice additions for those that love to tinker with minecart systems. Detector rails serve as pressure plates in track form and booster rails power minecarts ahead without the hassle of ugly and big booster attachments.
My friend Chris still plays there and asked me to come check out his new area and holy crap he has been really busy. In this post I'll show off the ground level of his huge castle. Above is the main entrance to the ground area.

Here's a small living area inside the middle building.
Here's Some WoW NewsTo start off I'd like to say sorry for the lack of posts over the past days; my internet connection was borked and my ISP took their time getting out here. They put in a new line and everything is fine now so the daily posts will continue!

While I was gone a bunch of cool WoW news has popped up on my favorite source mmo-champion so let's dive into it. Blizzard is still adding more and more to the 4.1 content patch which should hit live servers by the end of the month (hopefully).

Nice piece of fan art that could serve as a wallpaper.

Ten new cooking and ten new fishing daily quests are being added which hopefully will break up some of the monotony of doing the same dailies over and over again. Some them actually look kind of interesting; one involves summoning a moat monster and gouging it with fish and another has you fishing up a severed abomination head.

Archeology, the most frustrating profession in the game, is getting a bit of love. The fossil and troll branches are gaining some cool new items because they were desperately lacking them. Fossil is getting an epic shield and both troll and fossil will get some cool companion pets. A Voodoo Figurine and a Pterrodax Hatchling. All you collectors can have fun grinding arch for these.

Blizzard is implementing an interesting system to help combat long dungeon finder queue times. A Call to Arms will now identify which class role is most needed by the dungeon finder and additional rewards will be given to players who queue as that role and complete a random level 85 heroic dungeon.

The reward is a bag called the Satchel of Exotic Mysteries which has various potential rewards including gold, rare gems, non-combat pets, and (very rare) mounts. Blizzard has made it clear that the pets and mounts will not be specific to that bag and will be obtainable elsewhere in the game. The bag is also bind to account so dps classes (which will never have a call to arms) aren't totally screwed. If your prot warrior gets a bag with a cool mount that you want your rogue to have, you can just send it to him. I'm not sure how well this will improve queue times but we will have to wait and see.

Finally, a cool new water mount is being added to the game. This mount can be used in any water environment and is not limited to Vashj'ir. The Reins of Poseidus will drop from the level 81 elite rare spawn seahorse in Vashj'ir. The mount is basically a large, tricked out, version of the seahorse mount that everybody gets.

David Kim, Starcraft game balance designer.

The new 1.3 patch for Starcraft implemented a good deal of balance changes to the game and, as always, caused some heated discussion among players. In a recent post by David Kim they relayed their reasoning behind the changes to the community. I'll pick out the parts I found most interesting to discuss. The entire post can be found here.

Firstly Blizzard killed the archon toilet, which I explained how to do in an earlier blog post, calling it a bug fix rather than a balance change; vortex was meant to be a lockdown and not a wipe out their entire force move. Units leaving the vortex are now immune to all damage and untargetable for 1.5 seconds.

Next, the Khaydarin Amulet upgrade for High Templar was removed; this means that Templar can no longer cast psi-storm immediately after being warped in. The biggest reason they did this was because they felt that Protoss AoE was a bit overpowered. Instead of nerfing collosi they decided to adjust Templar.

Blizzard apparently also thinks that Terran rush capabilities were overpowered. Bunker build time was increased to make offensive bunkering (bunker rushes) more difficult. Also, stim pack research time was increased by 30 seconds to give opponents more time to scout and prepare for early stim pushes.

Ghost EMP was also nerfed to only drain 100 energy instead of all energy which is a very good change for protoss. EMP was just too strong against sentries, infestors, and high templar which I agree with.

Perhaps my favorite change (at least the most fun change) is that Battlecruisers got a movement speed buff! Blizzard thought cruisers were underused so they buffed their weakest point. I love Battlecruisers so I may start trying to incorporate them into builds more.

With the incredible amount of cash they made from the Celestial Steed I definitely saw this coming. However, now it seems that Blizzard is ramping up production of premium content, which to me is disturbing; it indicates the slippery slope effect. Here are the next two "mounts" that will be available from the store along with the lion:

You can individually purchase the wings for $19.99 or buy both of them for $29.99. To me this illustrates a disturbing trend. First Blizzard had a few in game pets that could be purchased, then one mount. Now it's a whole set of mounts along with the continued production of pets. I do not feel that in a subscription based game that development time should be spent on premium content, especially this amount of premium content. In the end Blizzard is a business and this kind of thing makes them money so they will continue with it and I don't blame them, expect to see a lot more of premium content in the future.

As an extra mmo-champion has a video up of the lion mount so here it is, no videos yet of the wings.
As far as I'm aware this is the first officially licensed by Notch Minecraft clothing which indicates a big step for the game. It means Notch is looking to expand Minecraft and make even more money off of it which in the end is good for us! The more money Minecraft makes the more effort Notch can / will put into it's development, at least I hope.

So those of you that are willing to express your inner geek and/or love of Minecraft in public rejoice! The rest of you just be glad that Notch is doing well, he deserves it for creating such a great game. Jinx even has an offer going right now where if you buy three or more shirts you get $5 off each, which makes it about $15 a shirt. Jinx is a great company and I'm glad that they are the ones that got the Minecraft license.

My personal favorite of the shirts that I will probably pick up is the creeper one.

Let's face it, Blizzard's tool is pathetic and no serious guilds will use it; so our friends at The Daily Blink have finished the guild finder for Blizz and posted a screenshot of their, far superior, guild finder tool!

As a raider that has experienced many different guilds I must say that this tool is fairly accurate and Blizzard should implement it immediately!Rabidmoosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14628403217555918425noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1669846678164725430.post-91180759972010260612011-03-25T21:33:00.000-04:002011-03-25T21:33:00.612-04:00Awesome Valor Point Changes Incoming In WoW

In the upcoming 4.1 patch the valor point system will be receiving a very nice change. Currently, players receive 70 points for completing the first random heroic five man dungeon they do in a day; this means that a player must log in everyday and do a heroic if they wish to acquire the maximum amount of points to buy gear with. This can be quite a pain because some days I, and many others, just don't have any time to play. Anybody like that will be delighted with the upcoming changes!

In 4.1 players will receive 70 valor points for the first seven heroics they complete each week. This means that if you have a ton of time to play one day you could quite possibly get a guild group together, blaze through some heroics, and be done for the rest of the week! This is a great change that allows players more freedom of choice. For me this is especially good as some days I just don't feel like playing WoW but I feel I must in order to not fall behind in the gear race.

Creepy tiki mask in the revamped Zul'Gurub

In addition to this change Blizzard announced something pretty interesting; the new heroics, revamped Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman, will be considered tier 2 heroics. Not only do they drop better gear but completing them rewards 140 valor points, double that of tier 1 heroics. This means that if a player runs ZG and ZA seven times a weak they can get a maximum of 980 valor points in a week! This doesn't "stack" with tier 1 heroics though, players can only receive valors from seven heroics in a week.

Be prepared to fight this guy, over and over and over.

My only concern here, besides the whole raid level gear being more easily accessible from 5 mans problem, is that currently there are only two "tier 2" heroics, ZA and ZG. This means that players wanting the maximum valor points will be doing these two over and over and over with no variety. Hopefully in 4.2 more tier two dungeons will be added to ease the monotony a bit.Rabidmoosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14628403217555918425noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1669846678164725430.post-20741267269511123842011-03-23T20:30:00.000-04:002011-03-23T20:30:20.974-04:00Minecraft Clay Making Machine

Place the water spring in the back so it flows towards you, the pressure plates in the front are there to stop the water from advancing any further. To use it place a gravel block directly in front of the pressure plate, it will touch the water and turn to clay instantly.

Now stand on the pressure plate and destroy the clay block, the water current will push the clay into you to be collected! Now rinse and repeat and you can turn all of your gravel into clay!
Last year Blizzard introduced, for the first time ever, an in game mount for all of your characters that was purchasable for 25 dollars. It was the celestial steed and God it had to be the ugliest, re-skinned piece of crap I've ever seen:

However, the playerbase proved their willingness to spend real life money on ugly in game mounts; if you will believe it Blizzard was making 500,000 dollars an hour for the first four to five hours. That huge pile of cash for a mount that essentially was the Algalon skin strapped onto the Invincible model. Of course they would do it again! They had to!

Recently mmo-champion datamined some screenshots of a flying lion thing and there was speculation of what it would be. Now Blizzard has released an official screenshot of it and said that it will be the next mount added to their store; it will probably cost $25 bucks like the star pony.

First I'd like to say that this mount looks way better than the star pony, at least they put some effort into it this time. I still won't be buying it though as I don't believe paying for in game items in a subscription based game is worth my money. But, I respect people's right to use their money however they see fit and Blizzard's right to do this as long as they don't start giving in game advantages through the store. And I'm sure thousands upon thousands of people will buy it and Blizzard will effectively print another truckload of money.

So I pose a question to you readers, would you pay $25 for an in game mount in a subscription based game and do you believe that it is "right" or "ok" for Blizzard to use development time on premium content only available to those that pay more?Rabidmoosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14628403217555918425noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1669846678164725430.post-66970988564019058332011-03-21T22:45:00.001-04:002011-03-21T22:45:53.032-04:00Slightly Off Topic Music Post!Just a few days ago Machinae Supremacy released a new video for their song, Force Feedback. I LOVE them and think they are an amazing band and figured I'd share their new video here; it is still slightly on topic because of the song's great meaning. It has to do with the many different incursions into the gaming and internet world by governments and other parties. I've included the powerful lyrics below as well.
Take a look across this vast uncharted battlefield
You still don't know your enemy
A bunch of pissed off freaks with infinite mad skillz
And a new found taste for blood

We made this life
You have no place here
No right

[Chorus:]
This is the world you're in
And this is where ours begins
A borderless nation of thoughts to replace
Your walled-in existence in space

We are like sleepers we hide in plain sight
If you can't see you cannot fight
This is the war between our culture and your laws
With millions born into the cause

Now we're taking it back
You don't believe me?
Feedback

[Chorus:]
This is the world you're in
And this is where ours begins
A borderless nation of thoughts to replace
Your walled-in existence in space

[Female vocals:]
I don't think you understand
These are our shores and our land
You are a stranger here
And we won't be idle as you interfere

[Spoken Japanese - female]
"You don't want to understand our reality is free here
Sure you already know
That your age was long ago
We augment reality online
And you hail from ancient times

The server packs many features and cool mods; it may be a little overwhelming at first but by typing /tutorial you are teleported to a tutorial area that will introduce you to most of the concepts. Here are some of the cool features of the server.

Mostly Functiontal Economy:
The ingame currency is gold ingots which can be aquired in a variety of ways. Finding, mining, and smelting gold is the most straightforward but not the easiest. Materials can be gathered and sold to shops or other players, the mod shop will buy almost anything but mabye not at the best prices. The other way to make gold is to complete achviements, many of which are quite easy; I'll discuss achievements more later. One last way of making money is by what me and my friends call pillaging. That is going around the wilderness looking for unprocted homes and searching and seizing any and all valuables; we gathered quite a nice stache of materials this way including 16g I found in some guy's hidden chest.

There is a fast and easy way to store and trade currency; a simple system of money commands deposits and withdraws gold ingots into a bank account from anywhere in the world meaning that there is no reason to carry, and possibly lose, money. To pay players simply type "/money pay playername amount" and the money will be transfered to their account. There is no "safe" way to trade items they just get thrown at you but if you get scammed or sombody nabs your items notify a mod and they will solve the problem.

There are many player made shops which usually specalize in a certain type of good; any player can apply to recieve a shop permit. The downside to this is that if the player is not online or does not feel like currently being at their shop at that time it is closed, so if you need obsidan for your nether portal right now and the guy that runs the nethershop isn't online, you are out of luck. Shops don't just sell items, some provide services. There is a repair shop that will repair your items for a price, a mini-game shop where you can gamble playing some really well designed games, a redstone technician that will build redstone contraptions for you, and a construction contractor that will build for you! Also there is a mod shop that is only open at certain times but will buy and sell nearly anything.

Protected Lot / City System:
The first thing you will want to buy with your gold, besides building materials, is a protected lot of land to saftley build on. You can build anywhere outside of the cities but it's fair game to anyone that comes along. You can pay a mod to protect a lot of land so that only people you allow can build or take from there, anyone else will simply see a message of "you do not have permission for this area."

City lots are smaller and more expensive than wilderness lots but are located within the cities. This means that more people will see your creation and that you are located closer to activity hubs; it also gives you the sense of living in a city. There are several player cities of varying sizes and differing prices on lots. City lots cost 30 gold plus extra based on the size of the lot; don't expect to get a city lot for less than 100g. If you are incredibly rich you can purchase a city permet and warp point, I'm not sure how much city permits cost but I know a warp costs 500g! The warp just lets players type /warp Cityname to teleport there.

In contrast, wilderness lots cost a flat 30g and can be much bigger; it isn't clear how big. When I asked a mod all he said was "as long as it isn't too big." City lots are usually laid out, but wilderness lots can be anywhere you want. Just run off into the wilds, lay down an outline, and get a mod to come protect it! The protection covers a square area all the way up and down so to get the most of your land a skyscraper approach is the best when building. I reccommend getting a wilderness lot asap so you have a safe place to store your items without worrying about thieves.The lots don't even have to be that far out either; our lot is a short walk from Spawn City.

PvP Area:
That's right, intense Minecraft PvP action! Normally PvP is disabled, however, from the spawn area you can take a portal to the PvP area where players can duke it out in epic battles! This area is mostly just for shits and giggles because Minecraft PvP isn't the best but it's good fun nonetheless. My favorite strategy is to take a lighter in and start setting people on fire; people may cry to the mods but it is legal and hella fun. There's nothing more statisfying than making the guy in diamond armor that was owning everyone flee in fear! Be wary here though because if you die you lose all your items!

Also, in a future update a capture the flag and team deathmatch arena system is being implimented which I'm sure will be lots of fun! Who new so much could be done in Minecraft?

Achievements:
Recently achievements were added and can be viewed ingame by typeing /achlist or on Sincraft's website. These achievements include placing a certain number of specific blocks, killing players, killing npcs, dying in different ways, or just swinging your arm. They award gold and random items when completed so it is a good idea to start doing the really easy ones to get some quick gold and items on the server.

Speedy and Helpful Mod Service:
Overall I have found the server mods to be avalible and helpful in most cases. Typine /pe in game allows you to create a petition that will get a mod's attention. If you need an area protected, your items restored after an accidental death in the normal world, to report a hacker, or ask for any other help you should be assited speedily.

They do seem a bit anal about the rules though. Me and my friends had some TNT and lava buckets in our bank that we were not using to grief at all just build; a mod searched and seized them and gave us a warning about contraband items. Also I was running around in my Hitler skin messing with my friend and was threatend with a ban even though I hadn't said a word in general chat, just the skin. Though I suppose if you want a safe, "big brother" environment then this server will please you. It doesn't bother me too much.

Final Thoughts:
This post is getting really long so I'll end it here with a few last thoughts. Server lag was a major problem up until a few days ago when a new server was purchased. Now it's minimal. Overall I like this server a lot and hope it gets more players even though it currently has plenty. There is a donater program that helps keep the server running but it is in no way necessary; donating just rewards you with kits and money as well as a colored name.You can check out Singaming's website at http://singaming.com/minecraft/forum/content.php
The original Magicka was set in a midevil period but the Magicka team, sticking to their wild and crazy side, have done a complete 180 by setting the DLC in...Vietnam! My guess is that they will use Vlad's time traveling powers to tie it into the story somehow.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be a wizard in Vietnam this game is for you! Check out the official trailer:
There will be seven bosses including Fandral Staghelm, former archdruid of Darnassus; Alysra, a green dragon; and of course Ragnaros the Firelord. In addition to the raid there will also be a new daily quest zone for more rep grinding, yay!

Even if you aren't protoss you should know about this to make sure you don't let it happen.

If you want to go for a toilet build a mothership first and warp some of your high templar into 4-5 archons; then move out with your entire army keeping the mothership and archons in the back so they do not get sniped early. Try to catch your opponent's army when they are clustered up and drop a vortex in the middle of them. Hopefully the majority of their army gets sucked into the vortex and the stragglers get picked off.

An opponent's gut reaction is to run into the vortex so that the part of their army not caught in it doesn't get mowed down on their own, but if you are going for a toilet this is exactly what you want. Charge all of your archons into the vortex and position your high templar in a spot where they can drop storms on top of the vortex. As soon as the vortex fades drop some storms on it, they aren't necessary as the archons do a pretty good job of murdering everything but they help.

Presto, all that is left of your opponent's 200/200 army is a bunch of blood. I've watched replays of diamond and even master league players losing a game to this technique; it is amazing how fast the food count drops in a split second. So if you are playing against a mothership and you see archons, run away from the vortex for the love of God don't seek safety within it!

If you are wondering why this works it is in face quite simple. Archons have an area of effect attack that will hit all units within a small distance of their target. The vortex sucks all units together into a tight ball on the same exact spot. So for a second after the vortex breaks all the units inside are right on top of eachother allowing the archons to hit everything at once. The storms are there to finish off weakend units. Here is a short youtube video I found of the toilet but you do not need nearly as many archons as that guy had, around 4 will suffice in most cases.
